I don't mind CCleaner so much because it just gets rid of cookies and temp files, but I mean these other programs seem a lot more risky to someone like me who has no idea what they are deleting. When uninstalling programs, I do use Geek uninstaller (Revo would be fine too) to remove items left by. So basically what I'm asking is am I worrying over nothing? And if there's a risk how great is it? And is it worth the boost in performance you get from getting rid of these "unwanted" files left by Microsoft and the like? Disk Cleanup vs CCleaner and Auslogics Defrag. blah blah blah" and to be honest it could delete vital things and I wouldn't know that it has done that OR how to get them back. The thing that has put me off most though is rival programs saying stuff like "many of our competitors claim to delete unwanted programs and files but actually end up deleting vital things, but we offer safer. but I have absolutely no idea what is needed and what is not and so would have to trust the judgement of these programs. However reading the FAQ's and comments has made me nervous, because they recommend keeping backups of everything just incase it deletes something it shouldn't so I can recover it.

I've downloaded and used CCleaner on my notebook and was about to install PC Decrapifier and Revo Uninstaller to get rid of other "unwanted" programs.

Ok so I have an 8 month old laptop (Dell Vostro 1500 running Vista Business) and have read various guides on this forum about notebook maintenance and they've recommended these programs to get rid of stuff I don't need.
